Monroe W. Johnson, 78, passed away suddenly Sept. 24, 2006. He was a loving husband and devoted father who loved golf, fishing and hunting coins with his metal detector. He was born in Norfolk to the late Ingolf M. Johnson and Mary E. Johnson. He grew up in the Lamberts Point section of Norfolk and as a veteran, graduated from Maury High School. He attended St. Leo University where he received his associate’s degree. He was a retired master sergeant from the U.S. Marines with more than 23 1/2 years of honorable service during which he served in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. After his military career he did home improvements and upon his final retirement he and his wife traveled the United States for seven years in a motor home. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Nora Jane Johnson; four daughters, Janey Wooliever, Betty Nath and husband Bruce, Sue Mathes and husband Dave and Cathy Johnson and her life partner Angela Fortenberry; seven grandchildren, Andy, Jason, Bree, Brian, Christy, Kelly and Hilary; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary E. Halsey and husband Garnett. A funeral will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Fort Story Chapel, Bldg. No. 600, Fort Story, with full military honors. The family will receive friends and relatives at the chapel from noon until the service time. Cremation & Funeral Services of Tidewater is handling arrangements. www.candfservices.com.

There was a great guest speaker from Batteries Plus, Brian Vitoritt, who spoke about rechargeable batteries. Some of the most interesting point other than the information in the handout he passed around, include:

Ø      Storing your rechargeable batteries discharged, then charge them overnight before you want to use then.  Discharge the batteries by leaving your machine to run the battery down.

Ø       Disconnect battery when your detector is not in use.

Ø      Do not store any batteries in the fridge—that was okay for the old mercury type batteries.

Ø      Batteries Plus will recycle any Non-alkaline battery free of charge.

Ø      Alkaline batteries can safely be thrown away.

Ø      The average rechargeable battery has about 1,000 recharges in it before it should be refurbished.

Fall Hunt

The Member's Only Fall Hunt is scheduled for Oct 15 2006 at the beach near 29th-30th streets in Virginia Beach. The cost to members is $10.00 (this is a hunt for members as of the August meeting). If you have not paid your entry fee let Nancy Hill (440-5763) know you will be hunting. Hunt will start at 2:30, seeding will start at 1:45 PM. Any members wanting to donate an item for the hunt can bring the item the day of the hunt. Bring a token or let us know and we can provide one.
